While the Fourth of July is cause for celebration, the Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that on average, 280 people go to the emergency room with fireworks-related injuries in July. To make the most of your Independence Day, try utilizing these firework safety tips.

Set a perimeter

Avoid having explosions or sparks hurt someone by marking off an area for spectators so they keep a safe distance from the fireworks. If you have pets, keep them indoors and distracted with a special treat or music turned on to keep them calm during the fireworks noise.

Dress appropriately

Embers can drop from the sky after fireworks go off, so proper attire is important while you celebrate. Refrain from wearing excessively baggy clothes that can catch fire, and be sure to pull long hair back into a ponytail or put it under a hat. Close-toed shoes should be worn at all times to prevent stepping on embers or having things fall on your feet and potentially burn them.

Choose a no-fire option

Plenty of options exist for Fourth of July celebrations that don't involve fire at all. Party snaps and string poppers are fun without lighting anything aflame. Colorful smoke bombs do need to be initially lit, but provide low-threat entertainment without explosions.
